positioning-basics
Help founders and marketers nail their positioning. Use when someone mentions "positioning," "value proposition," "who is this for," "how do I describe my product," "messaging," "ICP," "ideal customer," or is struggling to articulate what makes their product different.
Why use this skill?
Learn to define your product positioning, ICP, and value proposition using the OpenClaw positioning-basics skill for founders and marketers.
Install via CLI (Recommended)
clawhub install openclaw/skills/skills/bobdevibecoder/positioning-basicsWhat This Skill Does
The positioning-basics skill transforms the OpenClaw AI into a seasoned product marketing strategist. It is designed to help founders, product managers, and marketers cut through the noise of 'feature bloat' to define a razor-sharp market position. By utilizing the Core 5 Questions framework, the skill guides users through articulating their ICP (Ideal Customer Profile), identifying genuine pain points, and establishing a unique competitive moat. It moves beyond generic marketing fluff by forcing clarity on what the product actually does and why it matters to the specific user.

You can install this skill directly into your OpenClaw environment by running the following command in your terminal:

Ensure you have the latest version of OpenClaw installed to leverage the most recent refinements in the competitive mapping templates.
Use Cases
- Early-stage product launch: Perfect for founders who have a prototype but struggle to explain it to early adopters.
- Refining B2B Messaging: Useful for marketing teams looking to pivot from feature-focused landing pages to benefit-driven positioning.
- Sales Enablement: Ideal for sales teams who need to articulate 'Why Us' against entrenched enterprise competitors.
- Product Strategy Sessions: Use the Competitive Mapping table to identify where your product is weak and where it truly shines.
Example Prompts
- "I'm struggling to explain our new SaaS platform. We're getting lost in the market because users keep comparing us to legacy spreadsheets. Can you help me use the Positioning Statement Template to sharpen our messaging?"
- "We keep losing deals to 'do-it-yourself' workarounds. Use the Competitive Mapping tool to help me identify our true differentiator and where we are losing the battle."
- "I have an idea for a developer tool, but I'm stuck on Step 1. Help me define a single, specific target persona who is frustrated at 2pm on a Tuesday."
Tips & Limitations
- Be Honest: The positioning-basics skill is only as good as the input you provide. If you inflate your product's capabilities, the output will be misaligned with market reality.
- The 'Only We' Constraint: Don't skip Step 3. If you cannot complete the sentence 'Only we ____ because ____', you are not ready for a go-to-market strategy. Revisit your core value proposition first.
- Iterate: Positioning is a living document. Use the 'Validate with 5 Conversations' rule diligently—don't trust your own internal bias; trust your actual customer feedback.
