What This Skill Does

The TranscriptAPI skill is a comprehensive toolkit designed to integrate YouTube data directly into your OpenClaw workflow. It serves as a bridge between YouTube’s vast video repository and your agent’s processing capabilities. By leveraging the TranscriptAPI platform, you can fetch high-quality transcripts, search for specific video content across the entire YouTube network, browse channel uploads, retrieve latest video feeds, and explore playlist structures programmatically. This skill is ideal for users who need to automate research, summarize lengthy video content, or monitor specific YouTube creators without manually leaving the terminal environment.

Installation

To install this skill, run the following command in your terminal: clawhub install openclaw/skills/skills/therohitdas/transcriptapi. Once installed, the skill requires authentication via an API key from TranscriptAPI.com. If you do not have one, the setup process is automated through the tapi-auth.js script provided. Use the register command with your email to receive an OTP, then verify it to automatically generate and store your credentials securely in your configuration file. For advanced users, manual configuration via shell environment variables is also supported.

Use Cases

  • Automated Summarization: Instantly pull transcripts from any educational or news-related YouTube video to create summaries or actionable notes.
  • Content Research: Use the search functionality to identify relevant video content based on complex queries, facilitating faster literature reviews.
  • Creator Monitoring: Keep track of your favorite channels by listing their latest uploads or searching their entire video catalog.
  • Data Analysis: Extract metadata alongside transcript text to perform sentiment analysis or content topic modeling.

Example Prompts

  1. "What did they say in this video? Can you summarize the main points? [URL]"
  2. "Search YouTube for videos about the latest developments in quantum computing and list the top 5 results."
  3. "Find the latest uploads from the 'OpenAI' channel and give me a brief overview of the most recent one."

Tips & Limitations

  • API Credits: Each request, such as fetching a transcript or performing a search, costs 1 credit. Ensure your account has sufficient credits on TranscriptAPI.com.
  • Data Privacy: This tool interacts with public YouTube data. Ensure that you are respecting the copyright and terms of service of the content creators when processing their transcripts.
  • Formatting: When requesting transcripts, you can toggle between 'text' or 'json' formats depending on whether you want a clean reading experience or structured data for further programming tasks. Always verify that your API key is correctly exported in your shell profile for seamless CLI operation.
