Smart Home
Set up, automate, secure, and troubleshoot smart home devices with protocol selection, network isolation, and ecosystem-agnostic automation patterns.
Why use this skill?
Learn to build, secure, and automate your smart home with OpenClaw. Expert guidance on local-first protocols, VLAN isolation, and device troubleshooting.
Install via CLI (Recommended)
clawhub install openclaw/skills/skills/ivangdavila/smart-homeWhat This Skill Does
The Smart Home skill for OpenClaw is a comprehensive framework designed to architect, secure, and manage home automation ecosystems. It focuses on the shift from fragmented, cloud-dependent gadgets to cohesive, local-first environments. By prioritizing protocol selection (Matter, Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave) over brand loyalty, the skill ensures that your home remains functional even during internet outages. It provides actionable intelligence on network segmentation through VLANs, device troubleshooting, and systematic automation patterns that scale as your home grows.
Installation
To integrate this agent skill into your OpenClaw environment, execute the following command in your terminal:
clawhub install openclaw/skills/skills/ivangdavila/smart-home
Use Cases
- Architecture Planning: Designing a new home setup using the latest protocols like Matter and Thread.
- Security Hardening: Auditing existing IoT setups for security vulnerabilities, disabling UPnP, and configuring network isolation.
- Migration/Takeover: Resetting and claiming devices left behind by previous owners or transitioning from a cloud-only ecosystem to a local-first hub like Home Assistant.
- Automation Strategy: Deploying occupancy-based lighting, proximity-based security triggers, and energy-saving climate control patterns.
- Troubleshooting: Identifying the root cause of unresponsive devices by distinguishing between network congestion, protocol interference, or firmware bugs.
Example Prompts
- "I am moving into a new house and want a local-first smart home system. Which protocols should I prioritize, and how do I segment my VLAN for IoT devices?"
- "My smart bulbs keep disconnecting. Check my current device setup and suggest whether I should switch to a dedicated hub or reconfigure my WiFi channels."
- "Create an automation schedule for my living room that uses proximity sensors for lights but maintains privacy by keeping all processing local."
Tips & Limitations
The primary limitation of this skill is its reliance on the user's physical network hardware capabilities. To implement the recommended network isolation, you must possess a router or managed switch that supports VLAN tagging. Additionally, while the skill provides excellent guidance, it cannot physically perform hardware resets or wiring. Always start small; adding too many devices at once often leads to debugging fatigue. Focus on building a stable backbone with a reliable hub before scaling to complex, room-by-room automations.
