What This Skill Does

Reddit Spy is a high-performance intelligence tool engineered for the OpenClaw AI agent to facilitate stealthy, robust, and reliable data acquisition from Reddit. Unlike standard scrapers that fall victim to IP bans, this skill employs a multi-layered cascade system. It automatically sequences through OAuth authentication, Tor-routed SOCKS5 connections, and archival fallbacks to ensure consistent access to subreddit metadata, post content, and deep-threaded discussions. By prioritizing anonymity, it allows agents to conduct competitive intelligence and trend research without triggering Reddit's anti-bot infrastructure.

Installation

To integrate this intelligence tool into your environment, use the OpenClaw CLI: clawhub install openclaw/skills/skills/hioliver933/reddit-spy

Ensure your system has Tor installed and running as a service. While optional, providing Reddit OAuth credentials will significantly increase request reliability and speed, allowing for 60 requests per minute. Configure your environmental variables (REDDIT_CLIENT_ID, REDDIT_CLIENT_SECRET, etc.) in your session prior to execution.

Use Cases

  • Market Research: Identify trending problems or pain points in niche subreddits like r/IndieHackers or r/SaaS to validate product ideas.
  • Content Strategy: Analyze the 'hook' patterns of top-performing posts to understand what drives engagement in specific communities.
  • Competitive Intelligence: Monitor multiple subreddits simultaneously using bulk-scan to track industry sentiment or competitor mentions.
  • Sentiment Analysis: Utilize the deep-read command to extract full comment threads and perform deep-dive statistical analysis on user reception.

Example Prompts

  1. "Reddit Spy, scan r/SaaS for the top posts from this month and analyze the common themes in the comments to suggest three product opportunities."
  2. "Perform a deep-read on this thread: [URL], and tell me which users appear to be the most influential based on comment scores and depth."
  3. "Do a bulk-scan across r/Entrepreneur and r/Startup, compare the top discussions, and give me a report on the most frequent keywords used in the top 20 posts."

Tips & Limitations

  • Rate Limiting: If you do not use OAuth, rely on the Tor network. The system automatically rotates circuits, but excessive scraping may still lead to temporary delays.
  • Data Freshness: The PullPush fallback is excellent for historical data but may lag behind real-time events. Always prioritize OAuth or Tor layers for breaking news.
  • Responsibility: Use this tool ethically and respect the terms of service of the platforms you are querying. Do not automate actions that result in spamming.
