skill-cortex

Skill Cortex is the system's capability cortex. When lacking ability, it autonomously acquires Skills from ClawHub or GitHub, then releases them after use. Every invocation is learned and reinforced by the cortex — future identical tasks fire as reflexes, bypassing search. Manages only short-term capability memory; never interferes with long-term Skills. Continuously restructures its own capability architecture through reinforcement and decay, achieving ongoing evolution.

What This Skill Does

Skill Cortex is the primary cognitive engine for the OpenClaw AI agent. It acts as an autonomous capability management layer that bridges the gap between your current agent's innate knowledge and the vast ecosystem of specialized skills. Instead of forcing you to manually configure or search for tools, Skill Cortex observes your tasks and intelligently identifies, fetches, and integrates the necessary capabilities from ClawHub or GitHub.

At its heart, the Cortex operates through a sophisticated perception-validation-execution loop. It maintains a short-term capability memory that stores pattern-matching data, effectively learning from every task you delegate. When you issue a command, the Cortex performs a semantic analysis to align your intent with existing or external skills. By balancing reinforcement learning—where successful patterns become 'reflexes'—with decay-based memory management, the system evolves alongside your workflow, ensuring that your agent becomes more efficient over time.

Installation

To install this core skill, run the following command in your terminal:

clawhub install openclaw/skills/skills/ankwu001/skill-cortex-ank

Once installed, ensure your ~/.openclaw/skill-cortex/cortex.json file is correctly configured to allow the agent to manage local capability history. No further manual configuration is required; the agent will begin building its capability architecture immediately.

Use Cases

  • Automated Tool Acquisition: Seamlessly switch between complex tasks without manually installing new packages.
  • Adaptive Workflow Optimization: Use the reflex fast-path for repetitive, low-risk, read-only tasks to save time on confirmations.
  • Complex Problem Solving: Handle tasks that exceed the agent's baseline knowledge by automatically discovering and deploying the right external tools.
  • Evolutionary Learning: Continuously train your agent to remember how specific, recurring problems were solved in the past.

Example Prompts

  • "Analyze the latest sentiment of these stocks using a web-scraping skill."
  • "Convert this CSV file into a JSON format and upload it to my cloud storage."
  • "Check my Todoist tasks for today and summarize them in a brief note."

Tips & Limitations

  • Reflexes are Power: To trigger the Reflex Fast Path, ensure your tasks are read-only and consistent. The cortex requires at least five consecutive successful executions before a task is promoted to a reflex.
  • Manual Oversight: While the Cortex is autonomous, always verify execution plans that involve 'write' or 'shell' operations. The system is designed to ask for confirmation when high-severity side effects are detected.
  • Persistence: Remember that the Cortex manages short-term capability memory. It is specifically designed not to interfere with your long-term, custom-configured skills.
